March 31, 2010

We went to the drop-in center to play this afternoon and spent most of the time outdoors since it was sunny and not too chilly.

Ben loved this little car. It's one of those Little Tikes Cozy Coupes, except it is way old school and I'm pretty sure it's a station wagon! I so want one now (uh for Ben, of course). :P

Happy 14 Monthday Ben!

Today Ben and I made Easter cards with his hand and footprint-- the blue one is his hand and turned into a bunny... the yellow one is his foot and will be turned into a duck/chick. I would have taken pictures during the project but Ben with finger paint is very stressful situation. The last time we played with finger paint was for Christmas ornaments and I stopped to take a picture and Ben shoved his hands into his mouth and then crawled away with paint all over him. Good times.

What? What? I can't hear you.

This is Ben playing with three toys at once. He had all three going off at the same time and it was so very very loud.

Today we took Ipo to the off leash dog park/beach. It was sunny all morning but by the time we got there, it was overcast and the sky was a lovely dark grey/cement color out.

Ben stayed bundled up in his stroller cave eating his snacks from his penguin cup. I had put this cup away in his box of toys a long long time ago and Ben found it this morning while rummaging-- he was very pleased.

March 27, 2010

Tonight we played around with Ben's hair trying to decide if we should part it on the side or in the middle, brush it forward, or faux-hawk it up. Ben was not amused by the faux-hawk and kept pushing his hair down. I also got water in his eyes in the process which he was not amused by either. He gets that from me!

Ben apparently knows how to undo snaps.

I usually give Ben my house keys to play with while I'm driving (obviously an unsafe thing to do) to keep him entertained and not screaming at me. That red pouch things snaps closed and I have a few coins in there for use in the shopping carts at the grocery store. Today when I turned around, Ben was playing with the money-- putting it in and out of the red pouch. I think he learned it from his babyfriend Catherine last week!

Here's a picture of a squirrel! I have never seen a squirrel in our neighborhood and when I looked out the window during car naptime, there he was munching away! Ben takes his afternoon nap in the car because he refuses to do it in his crib anymore-- I have no idea why. We thought this meant he was ready for one nap, but that was a no-go, so it's back to napping in the car. He doesn't sleep that well but at least he does which has him back to sleeping through the night and taking a semi-decent morning nap.

March 25, 2010

Today it was pouring rain all day. Ben and I both didn't want to just sit around the house so we went out for lunch at Kokopelli. I bought a very healthy cinnamon brioche roll for me and a mango smoothie and grilled cheese for Ben. We ended up "sharing" the cinnamon roll and by "sharing" I mean I was lucky to even get a bite since Mr. Sticky Fingers here would take chunks of it and shove it in his mouth faster I could. It was delicious so I couldn't blame him.

Later in the day, we skyped with Grandma and Grandpa. Every time I'm on the computer, Ben wants me to skype. He gets very angry if no one is there or if I'm doing something else. Here Grandma and Grandpa answered so Ben was very pleased. He's started to point to Grandma/Grandpa/Auntie Celeste on the screen when you ask him to too.

I took Ben to the Westside Family Place Drop-In this afternoon.

Upstairs they have coffee and Starbucks pastries for 50 cents. Here Ben is relaxing in a Ben-sized papasan chair eating some banana bread.

Usually the drop-in is full of preschoolers but there were maybe 3 other kids there older than Ben this time around and tons of babies. This means the play kitchen was empty and Ben could actually play in it. He was being lazy though and wanted to sit in a chair at the stove.

March 23, 2010

Lately, anytime we go into Ben's room, he wants to be put into his crib. He laughs and shakes the bars and wanders around. He loves throwing stuff out of his crib and poking his foot through the slats.

I'm pretty sure he wants to spend more time in there to figure out how to climb out. He keeps putting his leg up and seeing if there's anything he can step up on.

Sometimes I hear a thud when Ben is napping and I think he made it out, but then I realize it's just Smudge jumping down from the cat tree.

March 22, 2010

Ben fell on his face today, directly on his nose and upper lip. Poor scratched and swollen nose. He's okay and doesn't seem to even notice. I of course feel like a terrible mother.

March 21, 2010

Today we all went to Kokopelli Cafe in Dunbar this afternoon. They have a kids play area in the back AND $2 lattes! H-e-a-v-e-n. Ben had a great time... he ate some of Rick's amazing blueberry muffin and enjoyed stabbing my sandwich with a fork. There were quite a few kids in the play area so we thought he'd be overwhelmed, but he was fine and was crawling everywhere and playing with everything.

March 20. 2010

We went to the Point Grey Kids Only Swapmeet today and bought a few toys (books, talking alphabet fridge magnet thing, chalkboard, and a Cabbage Patch doll!!!). They have a play area set up for the kids (and dads) in the middle to hang out in while the moms run around buying things for a dollar... er loonie. Here Ben is playing on a see saw. He loved it!

March 19, 2010

So I ended up signing Ben up for Jump again and today was our first class. Ben crawled under the balance beam and I was trying to take a picture of that, but by the time the camera took the picture, he was on the other side already. I was impressed that he made it since the beam is not even a foot off the ground. He had to try a couple of times to get his head low enough, but once he did, it was a piece of cake. He must get that try, try again attitude from Rick because we all know it didn't come from me.

March 18, 2010

This is the face Ben makes when he's whining at me about not getting his way. This face either leads to resignation and him playing with something else or he'll make a pouty face, ball up his fists, shut his eyes, turn red, start shaking, and hysterical crying... thankfully no throwing himself on the ground, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

March 17, 2010

This is what Ben looks like after every mealtime-- not because he plays with his food, this is how he looks just from eating. He's really into feeding himself with a fork or spoon lately. He still eats with his hands mostly though since the fork/spoon action is a work in progress.

The cereal on Ben's tray is Multigrain Life cereal. I bought it so that we could be more pretend healthy-- totally tastes like cardboard, but thankfully Ben likes it.

Man, my house looks really messy in the background... oh that's because it is.

March 16, 2010

Today Ben and I went to LilliQ for a meetup. Ben loves this little tugboat. He'll sit in there gleefully pretending to drive and honk the horn. He's also a big fan of the cash register on the play kitchen/store behind him. Today, they were conveniently placed side by side so that he could sit in the tugboat and reach the cash register at the same time- hooray!

March 15, 2010

For Ben's birthday, we got him a beginner tricycle. Rick put it together this morning. It's pretty much like any other ride-on toy, just tricycle looking and you know, awesome. It has fun streamers and a bell. Ben is obsessed with the bell, though he can't figure out how to make it ding yet... and to be honest, even I can't make it ding half the time.

For every new big toy, my plan is to take one that Ben's outgrown away. I picked this piano toy that Ben hardly plays with and the batteries have pretty much died. And as it goes, since that was the chosen toy, Ben is now obsessed with it and played with it all day long. Of course.

March 13, 2010

Well we are failing big time in the two to one nap transition. Ben either takes his morning nap, skips his afternoon one, and is then up for like 7 hours until bedtime or like today he doesn't take a morning one, doesn't take an afternoon one, and then passes out at about 3. Usually he falls asleep in the car but he was so exhausted today that he fell asleep as we were walking back to the car. He woke up at 4am today, so it was a relief that he did go to sleep at some point. The upside is that he was so tired that he left his bear hat on! And he looks super cute sleeping on Rick's shoulder.

March 12, 2010

This is Ben saying hello to the cats in their cat tree. This tree is originally Charlie's but Smudge spends the most time in it now. Charlie decided to reclaim it this morning though so Smudge was relegated to the middle perch.

One of Ben's favorite things to do is grab Smudge's tail... too bad it's not one of Smudge's favorite things. Ben is getting better at patting the cats gently instead of grabbing and smacking them. He still can't resist their tails though.

Yes, that is a Christmas wreath hanging on the door.

March 11, 2010

So a few days ago Ben took his first step. He did it twice and since then has had no interest in repeating the feat. He is however doing a ton of unassisted standing.

Here he is standing unassisted assisting me in making him a bottle.

First he had me open the backpack, then he took out his bottle and formula container. Then he put the bottle in my hand and took my other hand and placed it on top of the bottle to show me to open it. Then he had me open the formula container. Then he dumped the formula in. It was awesome.

March 10, 2010

I'm pretty sure that Ben will require a king sized bed once he transitions out of the crib. He loves playing and napping in our bed. He plays in the sheets, pushes the pillows off the bed, falls dramatically on the pillows, and best of all, one of the animals is usually on there too.

March 9, 2010

I took this picture so that I could talk about Ben and his shape sorter. He's holding the square block which he tries to shove into every other shape hole except for the square one. He gets super angry when it won't go in. I usually turn it to the square hole for him and he'll put it in a couple of times but then starts trying to jam it into the other shape holes soon again. He also tries to retrieve the blocks by sticking his hand into the shape holes and is frustrated when he can't get his hand and the block out at the same time. It's funny to me how mad he gets at the toy... not so funny to Ben though.

This is the second day in a row that I've dressed Ben in red and green. I'm not sure why. It has been pointed out to me that I dress Ben in some of the same colors I'm wearing. Ha.

March 8, 2010

Finally! Ben is the proud owner of a My First Anywhere Chair! He LOVES it. He doesn't sit and chillax in there yet, but he is having a blast climbing in and out. He's so excited when he does it. Hooray for Ben-sized chairs!

March 7, 2010

Mmm poutine. Ben has only wanted formula for about a few days now because he's sick. He even refuses chocolate. But we went and picked up some poutine and he dug right in. He was super energetic, non-clingy, and happy afterwards... maybe he just needed some salt?

March 6, 2010

Rick, Auntie Jinyoung, Ben, and I took a walk to the grocery store up the street to pick up some dinner supplies and to the cake shop to buy a cake. Here's another photo of Ben demonstrating the proper way to ride in a stroller. It started to rain just as we made it home which was a relief since Auntie Jinyoung and I are from California and we melt in the rain.

March 5, 2010

Yay Auntie Jinyoung is here!

It's been a month and a few of the balloons from Ben's birthday are still afloat. Amazing right? I am so impressed.

Here is a fun fake cleaning tip: If you don't have time to wash your couch cover, throw a sheet over it and voila, clean couch. Yeah yeah, I'm not fooling anyone, I know.

March 4, 2010

Sick Benjamin is not happy. He's so tired but he can't sleep because he's coughing so often that it wakes him up after a few minutes. No amount of saline drops, suctioning, steamy bathrooms, elevation, and humidifiers help. Ben even tried sleeping with his head over the edge of the bed... that was fun for mommy.

Here Ben is playing with his container of Cheerios. He likes to lift the flap and dump them out all that way. It kept him entertained for a few minutes. I don't even know if he ate any.

Ha.

March 2, 2010

Here is Ben happily eating puffs. He used to like to stick his hand into the container to grab some, but now he's into dumping them all out in his lap. It's pretty easy to clean up so I don't mind for now. Plus Ipo likes it too.

Happy 13 Monthday Ben!

Ben was born on the 30th, so when his actual monthday is when February is involved I have no idea. Last year we did it on the 28th, but this year the 1st seemed good.

And actually this picture is from a week ago when we celebrated Ben's 1st Birthday again with Auntie Celeste, Grandma, and Grandpa. I thought it would be a good picture to fudge for today. I don't have any pictures from today because Ben is sick AGAIN and we are all tired and grumpy. I think Ben was well for maybe 36 hours before he caught another cold. Poor us.
